Getting Started

It's time to tick a couple more places off our bucket list so we're off on a five week trip to explore Morocco and Egypt. We'll have approximately two and a half weeks in each so it's a pretty packed itinerary.

We will be braving what is sometimes reported to be crazy drivers, and local traffic police on the make, to undertake a self driving tour of Morocco. The plan is to do a 16-day loop from Casablanca - out to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi via Meknes and Fez, and back via Marrakesh and Essaouira.

The planned 16-day self drive tour route of Morocco
We'll be able to experience deserts, gorges and mountain passes along the way as well as the souks and sights of the cities. It is a country of fascinating history and culture and we are looking forward to exploring both.

Our time in Egypt is a little more straight forward. No self driving tour here. After checking out some pyramid thingies and a three-day Western Desert Tour, we'll just travel by train on the well worn track from Cairo up the Nile through Luxor to Aswan and then by road the Abu Simbel. After returning we'll check out Alexandria before one final day exploring more of Cairo. Along the way we expect to stumble across the odd ancient monument or two. Our main concern at the moment is that by the time we get to Aswan in particular, that the Autumn temperatures have started to kick in - at the moment the daily maximums are in the range of 41-42°C. Gasp!

One more sleep until the adventures begin (not counting any zzzzz we manage to get in the 27 hour trip to Casablanca via Doha)!
